GOOD in the HOOD

Good in the Hood focuses on uniting individuals and neighborhoods through service. We do this by holding 3-5 service projects every month.

What Good in the Hood does:
1. Facilitate cultural integration for refugees from all over the world through friendship and by providing economic needs

2. Provide assistance to the elderly through physical service and friendship

3. Provide economic assistance for those with special circumstances whether it is a one-time economic need or just support where friendship is needed

Good in the Hood is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of and building relationships with the members of our neighborhood.
Life isn’t about keeping score. It’s not about how many people call you and it’s not about who you’ve dated, are dated, or haven’t dated at all. It isn’t about who you’ve kissed, what sport you play, or which guy or girl likes you. It’s not about your shoes or your hair or the color of your skin or where you live or where you go to school. In fact it’s not about grades, money, clothes or colleges that accept you or not. Life isn’t about if you have lots of friends, or if you are alone, and it’s not about how accepted or unaccepted you are. Life just isn’t about that.

But life is about who you love and who you hurt. It’s about how you feel about yourself. It’s about trust, happiness and compassion. It’s about sticking up for your friends and replacing inner hate with love. Life is about avoiding jealousy, overcoming ignorance, and building confidence. It’s about what you say and what you mean. Its about seeing people for who they are and not what they have. Most of all, it is about choosing to use your life to touch someone else’s in a way that could never have been achieved otherwise. These choices are what life’s about.”

When we met I had no idea how important you would be to me.

To choose just one experience or principle I have learned over the last 20 months of volunteering with Good in the Hood is much more difficult than I expected. I have greatly benefitted from seeing the wealth of kindness that other members in our community have and share to others through Good in the Hood activities. I have seen service projects begin with volunteers that did not know one another, and ended with a sense of companionship that I did not know was possible to achieve in the span of a couple of hours.I have had the opportunity to meet community members who are going through trials that I can not fathom, yet they do it with a smile and a perseverance that inspires and taught me lessons for life. I have seen refugee’s come here not knowing anyone, any english, anything about our culture or society who are now thriving in our community and working more than full-time to provide for their families. I have seen thousands of community members unite to raise funds for various heart wrenching causes that are affecting local neighbors in need. I have seen hundreds of widows where their days have been brightened by volunteers who are willing to give a few precious moments of friendship, and I have also seen hundreds of volunteers days be brightened by the wonderful stories we continually hear from our older and wiser neighbors. I have seen the power that each individual has to strengthen those around them, and their community as a whole. I have seen the unlimited power a group of people have when they unite to accomplish greatness.
But last night I was fortunate to be on the receiving end of some Good in the Hood volunteers service. Every month for the last 20 months Good in the Hood volunteers have been delivering cookies to neighbors in need. The goal is to simply show love and build friendships with others in our community. Most often we deliver to elderly and at least one group goes to a local rest home every month. Last night I was sad to  not be able to attend  our monthly cookie delivery outing. A few days before I had had my Wisdom teeth removed and was suffering a bit from some normal sore symptoms. While my pride does not want to admit to being someone in need I was most definitely growing tired of being cooped up in my home and very ready to be free of my sore mouth. (I am a baby) At 8:45 PM my doorbell rang and three beautiful Good in the Hood volunteers arrived to take my mind off of my own trivial temporary complaints. They came with a note and filled with enthusiasm visited with me for an hour. I can truly say that I know those three girls better today than I did yesterday, and they made my Sunday better. I was on the receiving end of a “Cookie NIght” visit and was incredibly grateful. We always say Good in the Hood is not rocket science, we simply want to improve and unite individuals and our community through small acts of love, kindness, and friendship. Hannah, Haley, and Meredith accomplished this brilliantly last night by visiting not just me, but also two widows who I am sure were equally grateful by there presence in their homes. I am truly grateful for Good in the Hood, and more importantly grateful by the people that make it succeed.

An amazing lecture on happiness, work and life. Check it out!

I walked in and the house smelled like cookies. Right away I saw this as a good sign for the fact that sweet treats are my weakness. I soon found out that the hundreds of cookies were not to be eaten right then and there, but were going to be distributed to people in the neighborhood to remind them that someone cared. Everyone was talking about who they were going to take their cookies to. There was an excitement in the room. The atmosphere was not one you see everyday. Their was a feeling of true altruism.

I decided spur of the moment that night to go to the Good in the Hood Cookie Night, not knowing that after that cookie night I would soon find myself involved and surrounded by the most outstanding people. People that have qualities that the world needs, qualities that truly make a difference.

It took all but a minute to get me hooked. In a world where we often can loose sight of what is important, Good in the Hood make us realize that life is about the people. Life is about the people we impact and those that in return impact us.

Be the change you want to see in the world.
